Geneva, Switzerland - In a series of coordinated raids across three continents, law enforcement officials have apprehended James Handy, a 47-year-old American art dealer, on charges of masterminding an international art forgery ring valued at an estimated $12 million. According to a statement released by Interpol on Tuesday, Handy was taken into custody at a private gallery in the Montreux district following a six-month investigation.
The operation, codenamed "Canvas Cut," involved authorities from the United States, Switzerland, and Spain. Officials allege that Handy and at least four other suspects created and sold counterfeit works attributed to prominent 20th-century artists, including Mark Rothko and Piet Mondrian. The forged pieces were reportedly sold to unsuspecting collectors through legitimate auction houses and private sales between January 2023 and November 2024.
Interpol spokeswoman Marie Dubois stated that the investigation began after a forensic analysis of a painting revealed anachronistic materials, including a synthetic polymer not available at the time of the alleged artist's death. "Mr. Handy is accused of orchestrating a sophisticated supply chain, from the production of canvases and pigments to the fabrication of provenance documents," Dubois said. "This case represents a significant blow to organized art crime."
The suspect is currently being held in Switzerland and faces extradition to the United States, where a federal indictment was unsealed on Monday. A preliminary court hearing in Geneva has been scheduled for Friday.
