Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Eight States as Supercell Storms Approach
CHICAGO, IL — A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for portions of eight states across the Midwest and Ohio Valley, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The watch, effective until 10:00 PM CDT, covers northern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, southern Michigan, western Kentucky, southeast Missouri, eastern Iowa, and southwest Wisconsin. Meteorologists report that a low-pressure system combined with high instability, dew points in the mid-70s, and wind shear exceeding 40 knots is fueling the development of supercell thunderstorms. The primary threats include damaging straight-line winds up to 70 miles per hour, large hail measuring at least 1.75 inches in diameter, and isolated tornadoes. Several tornado warnings have already been issued for portions of central Indiana, and a confirmed funnel cloud was spotted near Bloomington at 4:15 PM CDT. Emergency management officials urge residents to seek shelter immediately if warnings are issued for their area. The NWS expects the watch to expand eastward overnight as the system intensifies.
