Are We Really Teaching Kids That 'Juneteenth' Is a Summer Camp Instead of Our Shared American History? Unpopular Opinion.
Okay, folks. I’m probably going to get roasted for this, but someone needs to say it. I just saw the local school district’s email about "Juneteenth family fun day" with bounce houses and face painting. Seriously? My granddad fought in a war so people could have rights, and now we’re reducing a MAJOR historical milestone to a reason to eat free hot dogs on a Tuesday.
Common sense tells me this: if you want to honor something, you teach it. You don’t just throw up a taco truck and call it a day. I’m all for celebrating freedom, but my neighbor’s kid thought "Juneteenth" was the name of a new Minecraft update. We have got to stop treating our history like a theme park. Maybe put half the budget for the bouncy castle into a real history book for the classroom? Unpopular opinion, but there it is.
