Darrell Sheets Apprehended in Multistate Manhunt After Alleged Financial Crimes Spree
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 8, 2025) – Federal authorities have confirmed the capture of Darrell Sheets, a 47-year-old former investment consultant, following a 72-hour multistate manhunt. Sheets, wanted on 14 counts of wire fraud and money laundering linked to an alleged Ponzi scheme defrauding over 200 investors of an estimated $12 million, was taken into custody without incident at a rural motel in Elko, Nevada, at 6:45 AM local time. The Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Denver field office led the operation with assistance from the Nevada Highway Patrol, acting on a tip from a motel employee who recognized Sheets from a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) alert. Investigators allege Sheets used falsified investment portfolios for his firm, Horizon Capital Group, to attract retirees and small business owners from Colorado and Arizona between 2021 and early 2025. Sheets is scheduled for an initial appearance before a federal magistrate in Reno, Nevada, on March 9, 2025, where prosecutors are expected to request his detention without bail due to flight risk. The U.S. Department of Justice urges any additional victims of the alleged scheme to contact the FBI's tip line.
