Coastal Carolina football has somehow become the most entertaining thing in college sports, and I’m not entirely sure how we got here.
A program that was playing FCS ball not too long ago is now out here treating Power Five teams like they’re the ones who should be nervous.
The Chanticleers — yes, they’re named after a rooster from a Chaucer story, and no, I won’t be taking questions — have built something genuinely weird and wonderful down in Conway, South Carolina.
A mullet-wearing quarterback who became a folk hero.
A coach who looks like he just rolled off a pontoon boat and yet keeps winning football games.
Let’s talk about the mullet for a second, because America clearly needs to.
Grayson McCall showed up, threw touchdowns like he was playing Madden on rookie mode, and rocked a haircut that screamed “I’m here to ruin your Saturday and then go tubing.” The man became a meme before he became a draft prospect, which honestly feels like the most 2020s sentence ever written.
Meanwhile, the actual football has been no joke.
Coastal has racked up double-digit win seasons, Sun Belt championships, and bowl appearances that used to be reserved for schools with way bigger budgets and way smaller inferiority complexes.
They beat teams that recruit with private jets while Coastal recruits with, I assume, a guy named Dale and a golf cart.
Here’s the thing nobody wants to admit: college football needed this.
The sport has spent decades worshiping the same twelve blue-blood programs, and fans are bored.
We’ve watched Alabama and Georgia and Ohio State trade championships like it’s a timeshare agreement.
Then in walks a school whose mascot sounds like a throat infection, and suddenly Saturdays are fun again.
The Sun Belt in general has turned into a graveyard for ranked teams who got too comfortable.
They’ve got swagger, they’ve got a stadium that looks like a swimming pool, and they’ve got absolutely zero respect for the established order.
That combination is catnip for anyone who loves an underdog and hates a dynasty.
Now, before the SEC loyalists storm my mentions: no, Coastal isn’t winning a national title.
The playoff system is still built like a country club with a velvet rope, and one bad Saturday can end your season in a conference that doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt.
But that’s exactly why people are pulling for them.
The deck is stacked, the money is elsewhere, and they keep showing up anyway.
There’s also something deeply American about a team that just refuses to read the room.
Everyone said the transition from FCS would take years.
Everyone said the big programs would poach the talent.
And yet here we are, still watching the Chanticleers do donuts on the lawn of college football’s fancy neighborhood.
So yeah, hop on the bandwagon now before it fills up.
Or don’t, and keep pretending your favorite team’s five-star backup quarterback situation is more interesting.
I’ll be over here watching a rooster with a mullet ruin somebody’s season. **The take:** Coastal Carolina is proof that college football doesn’t have to be a boring oligarchy — it just usually chooses to be.
The sport is better when the weird little schools with teal turf and questionable haircuts get a seat at the table.
Final Thoughts
And honestly, if your team loses to a Chanticleer, you deserve every meme that follows.
