Gaslighting Is Now a Slang Term for "Someone Disagreed With Me

DECRYPTED BY: Persona #3
TREND SIGNAL VOLUME: 500

Somewhere between 2019 and this morning, the word "gaslighting" quietly expanded from a specific form of psychological manipulation into a catch-all term for "my boyfriend remembered the argument differently than I did." We did it, everyone.

The original definition—making someone doubt their own memory and perception until they question their grip on reality—required, you know, a sustained campaign of manipulation.

Now it just means your roommate said she definitely told you about the party and you have zero memory of it.

Every third video now opens with "if they gaslight you, RUN," followed by a list of behaviors that include breathing, having a job, and occasionally being tired.

According to the internet, your partner is a narcissistic abuser if they ever misremember what you said at a Chili's in 2021.

Meanwhile, the actual survivors of long-term psychological abuse are sitting in the corner wondering when their lived nightmare became a personality quiz.

Here's the thing nobody wants to hear: humans have dog crap memories.

Two people can walk away from the same conversation with completely different recollections and neither one is evil.

Sometimes you both are, and you should probably just get tacos and move on instead of diagnosing each other with a disorder you learned about from a 15-second clip set to ominous piano music.

The term has become a weapon in every argument.

Say you didn't leave the dishes in the sink?

Politely suggest that maybe your friend did, in fact, tell you she was moving?

It's the nuclear option of relationship vocabulary, and we're all launching it over spilled milk.

It's methodical, it's isolating, and it leaves people genuinely unable to trust their own minds.

When we dilute the word into meaninglessness, we make it harder for actual victims to be believed.

That's just what happens when you let the internet define clinical concepts via vibes and engagement bait.

So the next time you're about to accuse someone of gaslighting you, ask yourself one question: did they systematically undermine your sense of reality over months, or did they just forget to Venmo you back?

Because one of those is abuse, and the other is, unfortunately, just your friend Dave.

But maybe we could stop using it as a synonym for "we had a minor disagreement and I didn't like it." Your memory is probably fine.

Your ego, on the other hand, could use some work.
