Look, I've got a complicated relationship with Fortnite.
It's the video game equivalent of that friend who shows up unannounced, eats your snacks, and somehow you still let them back in.
So when Epic Games announced the latest season overhaul, I did what any self-respecting adult with a mortgage and zero free time would do: I read the patch notes at 11 p.m. and got irrationally angry.
The new changes nuke the battle pass grind in ways that feel designed by someone who's never had a job.
XP rates got slashed, quests got weirder, and the item shop now rotates faster than my 401(k) during a bad earnings call.
If you play this game to unwind after work, congratulations, you now have a second job that pays in emotes.
Here's the part that really grinds my gears.
Fortnite has spent years becoming the digital equivalent of a shopping mall where you can also shoot people.
We built our little skins, we grinded our little levels, we pretended the $20 we dropped on a banana costume was a sound financial decision.
But now the game wants your time and your money, which is a bold ask in this economy.
Reddit, naturally, is handling this with the grace and restraint of a raccoon in a dumpster.
The main sub is a beautiful mosaic of rage posts, refund requests, and people threatening to uninstall forever, which they will absolutely not do.
Someone calculated that the new system takes 47% longer to max out.
Someone else wrote a 2,000-word essay with charts.
It's giving "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed" energy, except everyone is also mad.
What's funny is that we've been here before.
Fortnite has "ruined itself" approximately 400 times since 2018, and yet it's still printing money and hosting concerts for rappers I've never heard of.
The game survives because the core loop, drop in, loot up, panic-build, die to a 12-year-old in a cat outfit, remains stupidly fun.
You can dress it up with Marvel crossovers and anime collabs, but the skeleton is the same.
So here's my take, and I say this with love: Epic is testing how much nonsense its player base will tolerate, and the answer, historically, is "all of it." We'll grumble, we'll post memes, and we'll be back next Tuesday.
It's just the truth about a game that somehow became a lifestyle.
If you're thinking about quitting, you won't.
Final Thoughts
We just take a two-week break, come back for the new skin, and act like we were never gone.
