America decided somewhere in the last few years that we should maybe, possibly, kind of manufacture our own chips again after shipping all that knowledge overseas for thirty years because it was cheaper and shareholders liked it. The CHIPS and Science Act threw something like $52 billion at the problem, which sounds like a lot until you realize it's what we spend on decorative airport signage. The real tea, though, is that silicon isn't even the bottleneck anymore. The bottleneck is everything around it — the photolithography machines from a single Dutch company that you cannot buy unless you're on a very short list, the ultra-pure chemicals, the rare earths, the specialized labor that takes a decade to train, and the geopolitical vibes of a small island that China would very much like to have a word about. Taiwan makes roughly 90% of the world's most advanced chips. That's not a supply chain. That's a single point of failure wearing a hoodie and pretending everything's fine.
Now layer AI on top. Every chatbot query, every AI-generated image of a golden retriever riding a motorcycle, every "summarize this email" button — all of it chews through compute at a rate that would've made 2015-era engineers weep into their Monster Energy. Data centers are being built faster than you can say "grid capacity," and they all want the same thing: more silicon, faster silicon, silicon that runs cool, silicon that doesn't cost a mortgage.
And the vibes? Immaculate, if you're an investor. Terrifying if you're literally anyone else who needs a microcontroller for their car's brake system.
