There is a robot the size of a small SUV currently sitting in a dried-up Martian lakebed, and it has quietly done something no human institution has managed in the past decade: it told us the truth, patiently, without spin, and without asking for a budget increase.
The Curiosity rover landed in August 2012, lowered on cables from a rocket-powered sky crane in a sequence NASA engineers affectionately called “seven minutes of terror.” It survived. It has been drilling, zapping, and photographing ever since. Along the way, it confirmed that Gale Crater once held a freshwater lake with the chemical ingredients necessary for life. Not proof of aliens. Proof of *possibility*. In an era of certainty merchants and algorithm-driven outrage, the most honest voice in the solar system is a nuclear-powered geologist with a rock-vaporizing laser.
Here’s the uncomfortable part. Curiosity cost about $2.5 billion. Adjusted for how Americans actually spend money, that is roughly what we drop on Halloween candy in a single year, or what the Pentagon loses in accounting errors every few weeks. We found the building blocks of life on another planet for the price of a couple of stadium renovations. And most of us barely noticed, because we were busy arguing about a tweet.
The rover is now showing its age. Its wheels are cracked, its drill is temperamental, and a recent study confirmed the nuclear power source is declining roughly 4 percent per year. Mission planners estimate Curiosity has maybe a few good years left before it becomes a $2.5 billion paperweight on a cold, red plain. Meanwhile, its younger sibling Perseverance is collecting rock cores for a return mission that keeps getting delayed and descoped. We spent the money to go. We can’t seem to find the will to bring the samples home.
Look at what this machine represents. It was built by humans who disagreed about politics, religion, and everything else, and yet somehow agreed that drilling into Martian sandstone was worth doing. It was named by a sixth-grader. It has a Twitter account, or did, until the platform became a furnace. It has outlived multiple NASA administrators, several wars’ worth of news cycles, and our collective attention span.
The real scandal isn’t that Curiosity might die. It’s that we’ve become the kind of society that can send a robot across 140 million miles and then lose interest before it finishes the job. We fund the spectacle. We abandon the follow-through.
Curiosity found organic molecules in Martian mudstone. It measured methane spikes that no one can fully explain. It took a selfie on another world and made it look easy. And when it finally goes silent, we will probably mark the moment with a hashtag and a shrug.
Somewhere out there, a machine is doing careful science in a hostile environment, powered by decaying plutonium and the fading attention of a distracted species. We should be ashamed that it’s the more reliable of the two.
