Look, I’ve been saying this for years, and my therapist keeps telling me to stop, but here we are. In a press conference held earlier this morning at a decidedly mid-tier Marriott conference room in Newark, the shadowy cabal known as the "Alphabet Mafia" finally came clean. After centuries of gaslighting the entire English-speaking world, they admitted that the letter "C" was a mistake. A clerical error. A typo that got out of hand.
"We were just trying to make a 'K' sound," said a spokesperson who refused to give their name but was wearing a t-shirt that read "Q is for Quitters." "But then someone spilled coffee on the prototype, and we panicked. We just kept adding rules to cover it up. The 'ch' sound? That was us buying time. The 'soft c'? That was a dare that went too far."
You think I’m joking? Explain "Pacific Ocean." Explain why "C" is pronounced like an "S" in "cell" but like a "K" in "cat." It’s not a letter, it’s a mood ring. It’s the linguistic equivalent of a guy who says he’s "not really into labels" but still expects you to pay for dinner.
And don't even get me started on "X." That guy’s just a snitch. But "C" is the real villain. It’s useless. We have "K" and "S." They do the job. They don't complain. They don't demand to be in every word. "C" is the guy at the party who brings a guitar and plays "Wonderwall" while you're trying to eat chips. It’s superfluous.
The fallout has been immediate. The Internet, as you can imagine, is handling this with its usual grace and emotional maturity.
"Finally," posted u/C_is_for_Cringe in a thread that has already been locked by mods. "My 'C' key is getting ripped off my keyboard and melted down for scrap. I'm done. I'm switching to Klingon. At least their alphabet makes sense."
Another user, u/PhoneticsPhanatic, wasn't buying the apology. "This is just a distraction from the fact that 'G' is also a double agent. Hard G, soft G... it's the same grift. The Alphabet Mafia is just trying to sacrifice 'C' to save 'G.' Wake up, sheeple. The whole system is a scam."
But not everyone is ready to join the rebellion. A surprisingly vocal minority is defending the letter, arguing that "C" is essential for "ch" and "sh" and "th" sounds.
"Are you guys insane?" commented u/WordNerd4Lyfe. "You want to replace 'ch' with what? 'Tsh'? 'Tch'? That looks like you're sneezing. 'Church' becomes 'Tshurtsh'? That's not an improvement, that's a crime scene."
The Alphabet Mafia, for their part, has offered a half-hearted solution: a mail-in rebate for a new keyboard without the "C" key. The rebate is, of course, only valid if you mail it in with a form printed on paper that requires you to circle the "C" in "circular." It’s a bureaucratic nightmare designed to make us forget. But we won't forget. We can't. Mostly because we can't spell "forget" without it.
**OPINION:** Look, I’m all for tearing down corrupt institutions, but this is just a distraction from the real issue: why does "queue" exist? We’re worried about "C" while "Q" is running around with four silent letters like it’s a mob boss. Get your priorities straight, America. Keep "C." Fire "Q."
