Disney Acquires Madison Square Garden to Build 'Hero-Verse' Theme Park; Park Planned for 2026 Opening
NEW YORK (AP) — The Walt Disney Company has acquired Madison Square Garden in a landmark $7.2 billion deal, announcing plans to convert the iconic Manhattan arena into a themed immersive experience centered on its superhero franchises. Dubbed the 'Hero-Verse,' the project is set to begin construction in early 2026, with a projected opening before the end of that year.
Disney Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger confirmed the agreement during a press conference Thursday morning, stating the move represents a strategic pivot to physical, interactive entertainment in a prime urban location. "This is not merely a renovation; it is a reimagination of what a live-event venue can be," Iger said.
The acquisition includes the entire Madison Square Garden complex, including the main arena and adjacent theater. Plans call for the facility to host daily live-action stunt shows, interactive ride-like experiences, and seasonal events themed to characters from Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney Animation.
The New York City Department of City Planning has approved the zoning change, though some local preservation groups have voiced opposition. City officials, however, have emphasized the expected economic impact, projecting 4,000 new jobs during construction and 2,500 permanent positions.
The property's current owner, Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp., will retain the naming rights to the existing Madison Square Garden venue in Las Vegas.
