CROSSFIRE Erupts at High-Speed Police Chase in Downtown Sector, Three Injured
A dramatic high-speed police pursuit descended into a dangerous crossfire situation in the downtown metropolitan sector on Thursday evening, leaving three individuals injured and prompting a multi-agency response.
What began as a routine traffic stop escalated rapidly when the suspect vehicle, a black sedan with altered license plates, failed to comply and accelerated into heavy evening traffic. The pursuit covered approximately 12 miles through residential and commercial zones, reaching speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.
The situation transformed into a crossfire scenario when the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Marcus Cole, exited his vehicle in a parking structure at the intersection of 5th and Main Streets and exchanged gunfire with pursuing officers. Authorities report that Cole discharged a semi-automatic weapon approximately 15 times before additional law enforcement units arrived at the scene.
Three bystanders sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the exchange—two from shattered glass and one from a graze wound to the shoulder. All three were transported to City General Hospital and are listed in stable condition.
The suspect was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit, according to Deputy Police Commissioner Sarah Harding. "The reckless disregard for public safety exhibited tonight is appalling. Our officers acted with restraint and professionalism amid a dangerous crossfire."
The incident occurred at 6:47 PM local time. An investigation is ongoing, with the Office of Professional Standards reviewing body-worn camera footage. Cole faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault on a peace officer, and criminal possession of a weapon.
