Massive 2018-2022 Ford Safety Recall Issued Over Critical Brake Fluid Leak Risk

DETROIT, MI – Ford Motor Company has issued a sweeping safety recall affecting approximately 1.3 million vehicles from model years 2018 through 2022, citing a critical brake fluid leak that could lead to a loss of braking power.

WHAT: The recall targets a potential failure in the front-wheels speed sensor. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a contaminated sensor may cause a loss of anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) functionality. This defect could result in a significant leak of brake fluid at the wheel-end connection, increasing the risk of a crash.

WHY: The affected speed sensor can produce incorrect signals, leading the braking system to engage improperly. Over time, this can corrode the electrical connector and cause brake fluid to leak from the sensor’s seal. A sudden loss of brake fluid can drastically reduce stopping capability, posing a serious safety hazard.

WHEN: Ford will begin notifying vehicle owners on September 12, 2024. Dealers have been instructed to inspect the sensor and replace it if necessary, along with cleaning any contamination, at no cost to owners.

WHERE: This recall covers vehicles primarily in the United States, including the 2018-2022 Ford Escape, 2021-2022 Ford Bronco Sport, and 2022 Ford Maverick. It also extends to certain units in Canada and Mexico.

WHO: Owners of the specified Ford models are urged to check their vehicle’s recall status via the NHTSA website or Ford’s recall portal. Those with questions can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
