2018-2022 Ford Safety Recall Issued for Over 270,000 Vehicles Over Brake System Failure Risk
WASHINGTON D.C. — According to an official announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford Motor Company has issued a major safety recall affecting select 2018-2022 Ford vehicles. The recall was initiated on Monday, impacting more than 270,000 units due to a potential brake system failure.
What: The faulty component involves a rear brake hose assembly that may rupture, leading to a sudden loss of brake fluid. This condition can result in reduced braking performance or complete brake failure, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.
When: The recall was formally filed with NHTSA on October 21, 2024. Affected vehicle models include the 2018-2022 Ford Edge, 2019-2022 Ford Escape, 2020-2022 Ford Explorer, and 2019-2022 Ford F-150.
Where: The recall encompasses vehicles sold across the United States, including those registered in Canada and Mexico. Ford has stated that approximately 243,000 of the affected units are located in the U.S. market.
Why: Investigations by Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group found that improperly sized brake hoses, combined with road salt exposure in colder climates, can cause the hose to crack and leak. The defect was linked to twelve reported field incidents as of last month.
Who: Owners of the affected models are advised to contact their local Ford or Lincoln dealership immediately. Ford will replace the rear brake hoses at no cost to vehicle owners. Notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning November 21, 2024.
