2018-2022 Ford Safety Recall Issued Over Steering Component Defect
WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 25, 2025 – Ford Motor Company has announced a major safety recall affecting approximately 1.3 million vehicles from the 2018 through 2022 model years. The recall, which stems from a steering component defect, involves the potential for a loss of steering control.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the issue concerns a faulty front suspension lateral link, which may fracture due to improper heat treatment during manufacturing. This defect can lead to gradual steering misalignment and, in severe cases, a complete separation of the component, increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford initiated the recall after receiving 376 reports of related incidents in the United States, including two injuries and one alleged fatality. The affected models include the Ford Escape, Ford Explorer, and Lincoln Aviator. Owners are advised to contact their local authorized dealer for a free inspection and repair, which will involve replacing the suspect lateral links.
Notifications are scheduled to begin on March 10, 2025. Consumers can check their vehicle's eligibility by visiting NHTSA.gov or calling Ford's customer service hotline. The manufacturer urges all owners to prioritize immediate action to ensure vehicle safety.
