Resident Evil Veronica’s Missing Console Data Shows a Ghost Character That Never Existed, And It’s Playing the Game Without a Player
When data analyst Jenna Colecross dissected the final save file from a pristine, sealed Dreamcast copy of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, she expected to find the usual item inventory logs and boss triggers. Instead, she found a persistent third audio track and an unseen entity in the save system—a “player” registered as User ID 00X-Veronica, timestamped exactly 4:12 AM on the disc’s manufacturing date. The entity has an inventory of a single, unnamed key item and a full, identical infinite ammo loadout, but has never been spawned into any known character slot.
“The save file thinks someone played for 11 minutes, 23 seconds, but no known camera trigger or door animation corresponds to that time—it’s just a blank, silent hallway repeating one looped sound,” Colecross explains. The community has dubbed the anomaly “R.E. Zero” and is now trying to replicate the glitch to see if the invisible character can be contacted. Capcom has not commented, but collectors are reporting that sealed copies purchased during the original 2000 run have a faint, static-like hum when held to the ear.
