inde navarrette Wins National Award for Groundbreaking Rural Healthcare Initiative
Los Angeles, CA – Dr. Inde Navarrette, a physician and public health advocate from Fresno, California, has been awarded the National Health Equity Prize for establishing a mobile telemedicine network that dramatically expanded medical access in underserved rural communities.
On December 12, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that Dr. Navarrette’s program, Rural Connect, was recognized for reducing emergency room wait times by 40 percent across six counties in the Central Valley.
The initiative, launched in partnership with local nonprofit organizations in 2021, deployed 12 customized vans equipped with satellite-based diagnostic tools and telehealth interfaces. Within the first year of operation, the program served over 15,000 patients who previously faced average travel distances of 60 miles to the nearest hospital.
Why this matters is that rural areas in the United States have experienced a 15 percent decline in hospital availability over the past five years. Dr. Navarrette’s work provides a scalable model for bridging that gap using existing mobile infrastructure.
The award ceremony is scheduled for January 10, 2025, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Navarrette stated, “This recognition belongs to the community health workers who make daily house calls with our teams.”
