2018-2022 Ford Safety Recall Widens Over Risk of Engine Fire While Driving
DETROIT, MI (March 10, 2025) – Ford Motor Company has announced a major expansion of a safety recall affecting select 2018 through 2022 model year vehicles. The recall now covers an additional 145,000 units due to a defect that may cause an engine compartment fire.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue involves a porous engine block that can develop cracks, leading to pressurized engine oil leaks. If the leaking oil contacts hot exhaust components, it can ignite, posing a risk of a vehicle fire while the engine is running or immediately after shutdown.
The expanded recall specifically impacts certain Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Ford F-150 and F-250 models equipped with the 3.0L, 3.3L, 3.5L EcoBoost, or 5.0L engines. Ford has confirmed 27 reports of fires and four minor injuries linked to the defect. They are developing a final repair plan, which may include a software update, installation of a drain tube, or engine replacement.
Affected owners will be notified by mail starting April 15, 2025. In the interim, Ford advises drivers to monitor for visible smoke or the smell of burning oil under the hood. If warning signs appear, they are to park the vehicle outdoors away from structures and contact a Ford dealer immediately.
