2018-2022 Ford Safety Recall Targets Over 272,000 Vehicles for Power Loss and Brake Failure Risks
DETROIT, MI – Officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have confirmed a major safety action affecting tens of thousands of Ford vehicles. The 2018-2022 Ford safety recall addresses a critical defect in the powertrain control module and hydraulic brake system, potentially causing sudden engine power loss and compromised braking performance. According to the NHTSA filing, the defect originates from a software error in the transmission range sensor, which may misidentify the gear position, rendering the vehicle unexpectedly in neutral during operation. Additionally, a separate manufacturing flaw in the brake booster assembly could result in reduced braking assistance, increasing the risk of a collision. Ford Motor Company has acknowledged 15 reports of crashes and three injuries potentially linked to the issue. The affected models include certain 2018-2022 Ford F-150 trucks, 2020-2021 Ford Explorer SUVs, and 2019-2022 Ford Transit vans. Dealers will perform a software update and inspect the brake components at no cost to owners. Notification letters are scheduled to be mailed starting April 7, 2025. Owners are urged to contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or visit its safety recall website for further details.
