2018-2022 ford safety recall expands to include 1.2 million F-150 trucks over unexpected downshift risk
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A major expansion of the 2018-2022 ford safety recall has been announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, involving approximately 1.2 million Ford F-150 trucks in the United States. The recall specifically targets model years 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022, and addresses a defect in the transmission output shaft speed sensor. When this sensor fails, it can cause the vehicle to unexpectedly downshift to first gear, regardless of speed, which significantly increases the risk of a loss of control and subsequent crash. For most owners, the remedy involves a software update to the powertrain control module and, if necessary, replacement of the sensor. Ford has not yet provided a timeline for when parts will be available, but will notify affected owners via mail starting in April 2025. This action follows nearly 900 complaints and multiple injury reports related to the defect.
