Stellar Blade Developer Announces Major Expansion, Introducing Multiplayer Co-op Mode for Q4 2024
SEOUL, South Korea — In a groundbreaking announcement on Wednesday, SHIFT UP Corporation, the developer behind the critically acclaimed action game Stellar Blade, revealed plans for a major expansion expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2024. The update will introduce a cooperative multiplayer mode for the first time, allowing up to four players to team up and battle alongside protagonist Eve.
According to a formal press release, the expansion, tentatively titled "Stellar Blade: Echo Protocol," will feature a new storyline set after the main campaign, focusing on the aftermath of humanity's struggle against the Naytiba. Players can expect enhanced combat mechanics tailored for cooperative play, including shared skill trees and combo systems. The update will also include five new explorable areas, including a sprawling desert ruin and a derelict orbital station.

Industry analysts from Niko Partners estimate that the expansion could boost Stellar Blade's player base by 40%, capitalizing on the game's strong sales momentum since its April launch. The standard edition of Stellar Blade, currently priced at $69.99 exclusively for PlayStation 5, has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide as of August, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment data.
The announcement comes amid rising competition in the action RPG market, following recent announcements from peers like Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 and Bandai Namco's Elden Ring DLC. No pricing details for "Echo Protocol" have been disclosed, but pre-orders are expected to open in September. An official gameplay trailer will debut at the Tokyo Game Show next month.
