Federal Judge Issues Injunction Amid Federal Challenges to DOJ Program Aimed at Voting Rights
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A federal district court has issued a preliminary injunction against a Department of Justice program designed to monitor polling places for voter suppression, marking a significant development in ongoing federal challenges to DOJ program authority. The ruling, delivered on Tuesday by Judge Michael T. Harrison of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, temporarily halts the initiative, which had been launched to enforce compliance with the Voting Rights Act. The lawsuit, filed by a coalition of plaintiffs including the American Civil Liberties Union, contends that the program exceeds the DOJ’s statutory mandate. The Department of Justice is expected to file an appeal within the next 48 hours, according to a spokesman. The case is now headed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
