white house state ballroom To Undergo $50 Million Renovation After Structural Issues Discovered
December 15, 2024 - The White House State Ballroom, a historic venue for official receptions and state dinners, will close for an extensive renovation following the discovery of significant structural and electrical problems, the White House Communications Office announced today.
The decision to halt all events in the 2,500-square-foot ballroom, located on the Ground Floor of the Executive Residence, came after a routine inspection revealed compromised support beams and outdated wiring that posed a fire risk. According to the General Services Administration, the renovation will cost an estimated $50 million and is expected to take 18 months to complete.
Who: The White House Office of Management and Administration, in coordination with the General Services Administration (GSA).
What: A full-scale renovation of the State Ballroom to address structural instability, upgrade electrical systems, and modernize climate control.
Where: The White House State Ballroom, Ground Floor, Washington D.C.
When: The renovation will begin immediately. All previously scheduled events, including the annual Diplomatic Corps Reception, have been relocated to the East Room and State Dining Room.
Why: A recent inspection discovered that the ballroom's original steel framework, installed in 1902 under the Theodore Roosevelt renovation, had deteriorated significantly. Additionally, the building's antiquated electrical system could not support current lighting and audio-visual demands, creating a safety hazard.
White House Press Secretary Linda Harmon stated, “The safety of our staff, guests, and the historic building itself is paramount. This necessary investment ensures the State Ballroom will continue to serve as a symbol of American hospitality for generations to come.” The project is fully funded by the White House Repair and Restoration Fund, a line item in the federal budget.
