PARIS, FRANCE — Iranian-French filmmaker and graphic novelist Marjane Satrapi, known for her acclaimed autobiographical work Persepolis, has announced the release of a new graphic memoir titled The Light of Exile, her first major literary project in over a decade.
Satrapi, who rose to international prominence with her 2000 graphic novel chronicling her childhood during the Iranian Revolution and subsequent exile, revealed in a news conference on Monday that the new book addresses the isolation and creative liberation she experienced following her controversial 2022 public statements on political protest and censorship.
Released by French publisher L'Association, The Light of Exile details Satrapi's residency in a secluded Swiss village, where she produced a series of illustrated diary entries reflecting on memory, cultural dislocation, and the role of the artist in polarized societies. "I felt the need to reclaim my voice through ink and paper, away from the noise of social media," Satrapi stated, as quoted in an official press release.
The announcement coincided with a limited exhibition of her original drawings at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, which opened to the public yesterday. Critics have already praised the work as a "poignant and unflinching examination of identity in exile," according to early reviews from Le Monde.
