United States Customs and Border Protection Reports Over One Million Encounters at Southwest Border in Fiscal Year 2024
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Customs and Border Protection has reported a total of over one million encounters with migrants at the southwest border during fiscal year 2024, according to official data released Thursday. The agency stated that its personnel processed 1,092,819 encounters between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024, representing a 12 percent decrease compared to the previous fiscal year. Officials attributed the decline to enhanced enforcement measures and increased cooperation with international partners. The United States Customs and Border Protection noted that 78 percent of encounters resulted in either expedited removal or processing under Title 8 authority, while the remaining 22 percent involved individuals presenting for humanitarian protection. The report highlights ongoing challenges related to border security and immigration management, with the agency continuing to deploy additional resources and technology to monitor activity along the southern frontier.
