TSA Intercepts Record-Breaking Number of Firearms at Airport Security Checkpoints in 2025
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Transportation Security Administration announced Wednesday that it has intercepted a record-breaking number of firearms at airport security checkpoints nationwide during the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant increase from previous years. According to official data, TSA officers confiscated 1,872 firearms from carry-on luggage between January and March, a 15 percent rise compared to the same period in 2024. The majority of these weapons, approximately 86 percent, were found loaded. Officials attribute the surge to heightened passenger volume and inadequate awareness of firearm transportation regulations. TSA Administrator David Pekoske emphasized the importance of compliance, urging travelers to declare firearms in checked baggage as required by federal law. The agency has implemented additional screening protocols and public awareness campaigns to mitigate risks.
