Superyacht Seized in Mediterranean Operation Amid International Sanctions Probe
GENEVA — A 300-foot superyacht has been apprehended by multinational authorities in a coordinated operation in the Mediterranean Sea, according to a joint statement released Thursday by the Swiss Federal Office of Justice and the Italian Guardia di Finanza. The vessel, identified as the "Luminara," was seized off the coast of Sardinia under suspicion of violating international sanctions.
The operation took place at approximately 0600 hours local time on Wednesday, when Italian authorities, acting on a warrant from Swiss prosecutors, intercepted the luxury vessel. Investigators stated that the superyacht is believed to be owned by a Russian oligarch currently under European Union sanctions imposed in response to geopolitical conflicts. The vessel, valued at an estimated 250 million euros, was reportedly attempting to transit international waters without proper clearance.
The detainment involved a boarding party that secured the yacht without incident. All 18 crew members were detained for questioning, though no injuries were reported. Authorities have confirmed that the yacht will be held in an Italian port pending a formal forfeiture hearing.
