Sagrada Familia Construction Final Phase Approved After 143 Years
BARCELONA, SPAIN — The city council of Barcelona has formally approved the final construction phase of the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, a landmark project that began 143 years ago. According to officials, the approval grants the necessary building permits for the completion of the central tower, which will be the tallest religious structure in Europe at 172 meters. The process has been delayed for decades due to a lack of permits, historical disputes, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Construction is now scheduled to finish by 2026, marking the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudi's death. City planners and church representatives confirmed the agreement, which includes a municipal payment of 36 million euros for infrastructure improvements. The final phase will focus on erecting the tower of Jesus Christ, which will be topped with a 17-meter cross. Officials stated that once completed, the basilica will serve as a fully functional place of worship and a major tourist attraction, drawing an estimated 4.5 million annual visitors. The decision was reached after negotiations over safety, urban impact, and cultural preservation.
