Applebee's Calexico Location Closure Marks End of an Era for Imperial Valley Dining
CALEXICO, CA — Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar has permanently closed its Calexico location, ending a years-long presence in the Imperial Valley, effective immediately this week.
According to corporate representatives from Dine Brands Global, the parent company of Applebee's, the decision to shutter the restaurant at 1200 Imperial Avenue was made following a routine performance review that determined the site was no longer financially viable in the current market. The closure affects approximately 45 employees, who have been offered transfer opportunities to nearby locations in El Centro and Yuma, Arizona.
The closure is attributed to shifting consumer traffic patterns and rising operational costs, including increased food and labor expenses, which have impacted profitability at the standalone site. Local patrons expressed disappointment on social media, recalling the venue as a staple for family dinners and community gatherings since its opening in 1999.
This development marks one of several recent closures within the chain's portfolio as Applebee's continues to streamline its footprint amid a competitive fast-casual dining landscape. The nearest remaining Applebee's for Calexico residents is now located approximately 30 miles north in El Centro.
