Kuwait Announces Major Renewable Energy Initiative to Power National Grid by 2030
KUWAIT CITY — The Government of Kuwait today announced a comprehensive renewable energy project to supply 15 percent of the national electricity grid by the year 2030. The announcement, made by the Ministry of Electricity and Water, details a multibillion-dollar investment in solar and wind infrastructure to be developed in the northern desert region. Under the plan, a new power plant will be constructed at the Shagaya Renewable Energy Park, aiming to reduce the nation's reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative supports the country's broader Vision 2035 strategy for economic diversification and environmental sustainability. Officials stated that construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with commercial operations expected to commence two years later. The project is projected to cut carbon emissions by an estimated 2.5 million tons annually.
