IRS announces new initiative to address Social Security debt collections in Iowa, impacting thousands of retirees.
DES MOINES, IOWA — The Internal Revenue Service has unveiled a targeted compliance program to recover an estimated 340 million dollars in unpaid Social Security overpayments from Iowa residents, officials confirmed Wednesday. The agency stated that letters will be mailed to approximately 15,000 beneficiaries in the state who have outstanding debts related to Social Security benefits. The initiative, part of a broader federal effort to reduce taxpayer losses, will require recipients to verify their income and address discrepancies within 30 days or face automatic withholding from future benefit payments. Iowa is the first state selected due to higher-than-average overpayment error rates identified in a 2023 audit. The IRS emphasized that penalties and interest will be waived for those who voluntarily cooperate before the deadline.
