Bill Pulte Announces New Philanthropic Initiative Targeting Homelessness in Major U.S. Cities
DETROIT, MI — What began as a viral social media campaign has now evolved into a structured non-profit effort as millionaire philanthropist Bill Pulte unveiled a major initiative on Wednesday aimed at providing direct financial aid to homeless individuals in urban centers across the United States.
Pulte, widely known for his unorthodox method of randomly giving cash to strangers on Twitter, announced the creation of the Pulte Foundation during a press conference at a community center on the city's west side. He stated that the foundation will allocate an initial USD 10 million to deploy "micro-grants" of up to USD 500 each to unsheltered persons in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago over the next six months.
According to Pulte, the program will bypass traditional bureaucratic channels by using a mobile application and public nominations on social media to identify recipients. He emphasized that funds will be distributed immediately via digital wallets to ensure no overhead costs divert money from those in need. "We are going straight to the people," Pulte declared.
The announcement comes amid a national rise in homelessness, with the Department of Housing and Urban Development reporting a 12 percent increase in unsheltered populations in 2024. Critics, however, have questioned the long-term impact of cash handouts versus systemic housing solutions.
Local officials in Detroit expressed cautious support, with Mayor Mike Duggan stating that any effort to alleviate suffering deserves a fair trial. The first distribution event is scheduled for next Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles.
