Bakersfield Imposes Citywide Curfew After Coordinated Looting Rings Target Downtown Businesses
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - In response to a surge in organized retail theft, the City of Bakersfield has enacted a mandatory citywide curfew, effective immediately, after a series of coordinated looting rings targeted downtown businesses late Tuesday night. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, at least twelve separate commercial properties, including jewelry stores and electronic retailers, were breached by six to eight masked suspects using vehicles to ram through storefronts. Authorities report that the suspects, believed to be part of a regional criminal network, escaped with an estimated value of several hundred thousand dollars in merchandise before officers could respond. No injuries have been reported, but Mayor Karen Goh stated the curfew, which runs from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, is a necessary measure to prevent further escalation. The investigation remains ongoing as police review surveillance footage and coordinate with the Kern County District Attorney’s Office to file charges. This decisive action comes as business owners demand heightened security and stricter penalties for organized crime in the region.
