(AP) — Federal authorities have charged scott michael campbell, a 42-year-old resident of Chicago, Illinois, in connection with an alleged cryptocurrency fraud scheme that reportedly defrauded investors of more than $3.2 million. According to the indictment unsealed Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice, campbell faces a single count of wire fraud, with potential penalties including up to 20 years in federal prison. The charges assert that between January 2022 and November 2023, campbell promoted a fake digital currency investment platform, falsely promising guaranteed returns using fabricated trading data. Court documents indicate that the suspect used investor funds to finance personal expenses, including luxury vehicles and real estate purchases. The FBI arrested campbell at his residence without incident on Wednesday. The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Cyber Division and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 14, 2025.
