red lobster times square closure is a wake-up call for this city, but nobody wants to admit the real problem
So another tourist trap bites the dust. The Red Lobster in Times Square is closing, and everyone is acting shocked. Shocked, I tell you! Meanwhile, I've been walking past that place for years, and it was always a ghost town on weekdays. You had to pay $18 for a “lunch special” that barely filled a kid’s plate. Common sense says if you park a mediocre, overpriced restaurant in the most expensive real estate on the planet, it’s not going to survive on nostalgia alone. But no, we’d rather blame the landlord or the pizza rat than admit that maybe, just maybe, tourists are waking up to the fact that Times Square is a giant, overpriced mall with no soul. Bring on all the Dollar Slices and bodega cats. At least those know their market.
