NATO Announces Largest Military Exercise Since Cold War Amid Rising Tensions with Russia

BRUSSELS, Belgium — WHAT: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) today announced the commencement of its largest military exercise in over three decades, Operation Steadfast Defender 2024, involving approximately 90,000 troops from all 31 member states and partner nations.

WHEN: The exercise began on Monday and is scheduled to run through May, with planned maneuvers in multiple phases across Central and Eastern Europe.

WHERE: Operations are being conducted primarily in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Norway, Romania, and Germany, with air and naval drills extending across the Baltic Sea and North Atlantic.

WHO: The exercise is led by NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Christopher G. Cavoli, with contributions from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France as key force providers. Sweden, awaiting final ratification of its membership, is also participating.

WHY: NATO officials state the exercise is a direct response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s increased military posture along the alliance’s eastern flank. “This is a clear demonstration of our unity, strength, and determination to protect every inch of allied territory,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in a press conference. “It sends an unequivocal message to any potential aggressor, including Russia, that NATO is prepared to defend itself.”

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Moscow, with Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calling the exercise a “provocative escalation” that risks further destabilizing European security.
