NATO Secretary General Announces New Multinational Rapid Response Force to Counter Growing Threats
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM – The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, has officially announced the activation of a new, multinational rapid response force designed to bolster the alliance's eastern flank and respond to emerging security challenges. The announcement was made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a special press conference at the alliance's headquarters on Wednesday.
The new force, designated as the Allied Reaction Force (ARF), will consist of approximately 20,000 troops, including air, land, maritime, and special operations components. According to Secretary General Stoltenberg, the ARF is a direct evolution of the existing NATO Response Force (NRF), with enhanced readiness levels and a broader mandate to address hybrid warfare, cyberattacks, and conventional threats near member states' borders.
The decision was ratified by all 31 member nations following an emergency session of the North Atlantic Council. The move comes in response to heightened geopolitical tensions and an increased frequency of security incidents in the region. Strategic analysts have noted that this marks the most significant operational restructuring of the alliance's rapid deployment capabilities since the Cold War.
NATO officials confirmed that the force will be capable of deploying within 48 hours of activation, representing a significant improvement in response time over previous structures. Exercises involving the new force are expected to begin in the coming weeks, with a full operational capability target set for later this year.
