Global Study Reveals Music Listening Habits Surge by 40 Percent During Pandemic Lockdowns
GENEVA — A comprehensive global study published today by the World Health Organization and the International Music Council has revealed that music listening habits surged by an unprecedented 40 percent during pandemic lockdowns from 2020 to 2022. The research, which analyzed data from over 100,000 participants across 75 countries, found that average daily listening time increased from 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours, with streaming platforms accounting for 85 percent of the rise. The study attributes the surge to increased time at home, heightened emotional needs, and a search for solace through music. Researchers noted that genres such as classical, ambient, and lo-fi experienced the largest gains, while live performance attendance dropped by 90 percent. The findings highlight music's role as a coping mechanism during global crises, with 72 percent of respondents reporting that music significantly improved their mental health. The report recommends incorporating music into public health strategies for future emergencies.
