Colman Domingo Set to Star in Upcoming Biopic of Iconic Civil Rights Leader
LOS ANGELES (AP) — According to an official announcement from production studios on Wednesday, acclaimed actor Colman Domingo has been cast in the leading role for an upcoming biographical film chronicling the life of a prominent civil rights leader. The project, titled "Legacy of the March," is scheduled to begin principal photography in early 2025.
Domingo, known for his recent award-winning performance in "Rustin," will portray the figure who played a pivotal role in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches. The film will explore the leader's strategic alliances with other key activists and his influence on landmark voting rights legislation. The studio confirmed that production will take place on location in Alabama and Georgia.
The casting decision follows a seven-month search by director Ava DuVernay, who stated in a press release that Domingo was the "singular choice" for the role due to his ability to convey profound emotional depth. "This project demands an actor who can embody both resilience and vulnerability," DuVernay said. "Colman Domingo is that artist."
Industry analysts predict the biopic will generate significant awards season momentum, particularly given Domingo's previous Oscar nomination for "Rustin" in 2023. The film is slated for a limited theatrical release in December, with a wider expansion planned for early 2026. Further casting announcements are expected within the next two weeks.
