Clearwater Beach Shooting Leaves One Dead, Suspect Apprehended Following Police Chase
CLEARWATER, FL (August 19, 2025) — Authorities have confirmed that a fatal shooting on Clearwater Beach, which sent tourists scrambling for cover yesterday evening, resulted in the death of one adult male and the arrest of a 34-year-old suspect following a brief pursuit.
According to a press conference held by the Clearwater Police Department this morning, the incident occurred at approximately 6:47 p.m. local time near the intersection of Coronado Drive and Poinsettia Avenue. Officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in a crowded beachfront area adjacent to a popular resort.
Witnesses reported hearing three to four distinct gunshots before observing a male victim collapse on the sidewalk. Preliminary investigation suggests the altercation stemmed from a verbal dispute between two individuals. The suspect, identified as Marcus Thompson, a resident of Tampa, fled the scene on foot but was apprehended by officers approximately three blocks away after a brief pursuit. No officers discharged their weapons.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. There were no other injuries reported among bystanders.
The immediate area was closed for several hours as crime scene investigators processed evidence and interviewed witnesses. Police have confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the scene. The suspect is currently being held at the Pinellas County Jail and faces a charge of second-degree murder.
Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public and that the investigation remains active, with further details expected to be released later this week.
