New Wisconsin Department of Transportation Safety Initiative Targets a 20% Reduction in Highway Fatalities by 2027
Milwaukee, Wisconsin — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has officially launched a comprehensive statewide safety initiative, titled "Project Safe Miles," aimed at reducing highway fatalities by 20 percent over the next three years. Announced on Tuesday at a press conference in Madison, the program will implement enhanced traffic monitoring, increased funding for road infrastructure improvements, and a new public awareness campaign. According to WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson, the initiative is a direct response to a concerning 12 percent rise in traffic deaths reported in 2024, which totaled 612 fatalities. The plan will utilize federal grant funding and allocate an additional $45 million for high-risk corridor repairs and expanded sobriety checkpoints. State officials are urging all motorists to exercise heightened caution as enforcement of the new measures begins statewide.
