ATLANTA, GEORGIA — A 34-year-old man was taken into custody on Wednesday after he allegedly attempted to force open an emergency exit door during a transatlantic flight, prompting an emergency landing and a federal investigation. The incident occurred aboard Delta Air Lines Flight 189, en route from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to London Heathrow.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration and law enforcement officials, the unidentified passenger, a U.S. national, became disruptive approximately three hours into the flight. Witness statements indicate the individual shouted incoherent phrases before physically grappling with the emergency exit handle. Flight attendants and fellow passengers subdued him using flex cuffs as the flight crew declared an in-flight emergency. The aircraft, a Boeing 777, made an unscheduled landing at Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts, at 2:47 PM Eastern Time, where airport police and FBI agents met the aircraft.
Authorities confirmed the passenger faces federal charges, including interference with flight crew members and attempted endangerment of an aircraft.
