Unruly Aircraft Passenger Incident Forces Emergency Landing After Airborne Altercation
SALT LAKE CITY — An unruly aircraft passenger caused the emergency diversion of a commercial flight on Wednesday afternoon, following an airborne altercation that required intervention from law enforcement upon landing. According to officials, the incident occurred aboard Delta Air Lines Flight 1847, which was en route from Denver International Airport to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The flight was approximately two hours into its journey when a male passenger, identified as Mark Thompson, 38, of Phoenix, Arizona, allegedly began shouting expletives and attempting to open the cabin door. Witnesses reported that Thompson became agitated after a beverage service delay, subsequently refusing crew instructions to remain seated. The pilot declared an in-flight emergency and landed at Salt Lake City International Airport at approximately 2:35 p.m. Mountain Time. Port of Seattle Police officers and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were on standby, detaining Thompson without incident upon deplaning. No injuries were reported among the 172 passengers and six crew members. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the disruption, stating that the suspect was charged with interfering with a flight crew under federal statute, a felony carrying potential imprisonment. The investigation remains ongoing.
