Man Arrested After Unruly Aircraft Passenger Incident Forces Emergency Landing in Chicago
CHICAGO, IL – A 47-year-old man was taken into federal custody Monday evening after an unruly aircraft passenger incident on a commercial flight from Denver to New York forced an emergency landing at O’Hare International Airport, authorities confirmed.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the disruption occurred approximately one hour into the flight when the passenger, identified as Mark Thompson of Colorado, allegedly refused to comply with crew instructions, became verbally abusive, and attempted to open an aircraft door mid-flight. Fellow passengers and flight attendants intervened to restrain Thompson until the plane landed safely at 7:42 p.m. Central Time.
Law enforcement officials said Thompson now faces federal charges of interfering with flight crew operations, a felony that carries a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison. The incident resulted in a three-hour delay for the remaining 180 passengers, who were rebooked on a later flight.
The FAA reported that unruly aircraft passenger cases have surged by 25 percent in the past year, with this event highlighting ongoing concerns about inflight safety protocols. The investigation remains active, with Thompson scheduled to appear in federal court on Wednesday.
