Teen Uses Apple AirTag To Track Down Stolen Laptops In Pennsylvania, Leads Police To Major Theft Ring
SCRANTON, Pennsylvania – A 17-year-old high school student in Pennsylvania successfully used an Apple AirTag to recover two stolen laptops and led local law enforcement to dismantle a multi-county property theft ring, authorities confirmed Monday.
According to a press release from the Lackawanna County District Attorney's Office, the theft occurred on Thursday when an unknown individual broke into a private residence in Scranton and removed two laptop computers belonging to the teenager's family. The victim, whose name is being withheld due to his age, had previously placed an Apple AirTag inside the carrying case of one of the devices as a precautionary measure.
"When the family realized the laptops were missing, the teen immediately checked the Find My app and located the AirTag signal," said Sergeant Michael Torres of the Scranton Police Department during a formal briefing. "He did not attempt to confront the suspect but instead called 911, providing real-time updates on the device's location."
Law enforcement officers tracked the signal to a storage unit located approximately 15 miles north of Scranton. Upon arrival, police obtained a search warrant and discovered not only the two stolen laptops but also an estimated 45 additional electronic devices, including tablets, smartphones, and jewelry, valued at over $20,000. Investigators linked the haul to a series of unreported burglaries across Lackawanna and Luzerne counties over the past three months.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Marcus J. Holden of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, was arrested at the scene without incident. He is currently being held at the Lackawanna County Prison on charges of burglary, felony theft, and receiving stolen property. Holden's preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week.
District Attorney Mark A. Powell praised the teen's quick thinking and resourcefulness. "This is a textbook example of how the public can assist law
