Congressman Tom Kean Jr. Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Expand Access to Mental Health Services for First Responders
WASHINGTON — In a formal announcement from the Capitol, Congressman Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District has introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at expanding mental health resources for the nation’s first responders. The bill, titled the “First Responders Mental Health Support Act,” was co-sponsored by Representatives from both parties and seeks to address the elevated rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety among emergency personnel.
The legislation, introduced Tuesday, proposes the allocation of federal grants to local fire, police, and emergency medical services departments to establish confidential counseling programs and peer support networks. Under the measure, the Department of Health and Human Services would oversee the distribution of funds, with priority given to rural and underserved communities. Congressman Kean, a former state senator, cited personal advocacy from affected families in his district as a driving factor for the initiative.
The bill has garnered endorsement from the National Association of Police Organizations and the International Association of Fire Fighters. Critics, however, have raised concerns about potential funding offsets and the long-term sustainability of the program. The legislation has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for further review.
