GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — Romanian officials have announced a sweeping initiative to digitize nearly 500 years of historical documents using advanced artificial intelligence systems. The project, titled "Digital Time Bridge: Romania's Heritage," will employ machine learning algorithms to scan, transcribe, and translate millions of state records, church ledgers, and medieval manuscripts currently stored in the National Archives of Romania. The initiative, revealed during a press conference at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization headquarters, is expected to make the nation's entire historical repository freely accessible online for researchers and the public within five years. Officials cited a pressing need to preserve fragile, aging documents and boost academic tourism as primary motivations. The first phase of the rollout is scheduled to begin in the capital, Bucharest, in September.
