PlayStation Plus Subscriber Base Surpasses 50 Million Globally Following Major Service Overhaul
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that its PlayStation Plus subscription service has surpassed 50 million subscribers worldwide, a milestone achieved after the company's restructuring of the platform into three distinct tiers. The update was released on Tuesday, February 13, at 10:00 AM Pacific Time, through a corporate earnings report.
The 50 million figure, representing approximately a 10 percent increase from the previous fiscal quarter, was reached in January, according to Sony's financial data. The service, originally launched in 2010 as a mandatory paid subscription for online multiplayer, now includes the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers, offering varying levels of game access and features.
Industry analysts attribute the growth to the July 2023 introduction of game catalog expansions, which added hundreds of titles to the Extra and Premium tiers. The increase comes as Sony faces competition from rival services, including Microsoft's Game Pass, which reported 34 million subscribers in February. Sony confirmed that the new subscriber count includes all active accounts across the three tiers, with the Premium tier showing the highest growth rate.
The announcement follows a quarterly revenue report indicating a 15 percent increase in the company's gaming and network services segment. Sony has not specified a timeline for further subscriber milestones.
