The Norwegian Nobel Committee has officially announced that human rights advocate and digital privacy expert Eleanor Ross has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her groundbreaking work in establishing the Global Digital Privacy Shield. According to the committee, Ross, 47, was recognized for her extraordinary leadership over the past decade in developing a universally accessible framework that protects personal data from government and corporate overreach, thereby reducing surveillance-based human rights abuses in over 120 countries. The award, valued at approximately 11 million Swedish kronor, will be presented at a formal ceremony in Oslo on 10 December. Ross, in a brief statement from her office in Geneva, emphasized that the initiative, launched in 2020, has already safeguarded the digital identities of an estimated 500 million vulnerable individuals worldwide.
