Former Covington Principal Arrested on Multiple Charges of Misconduct

COVINGTON, La. — A former principal of a Covington elementary school has been arrested following a months-long investigation into allegations of financial misconduct and ethical violations.

According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Sandra Mitchell, was taken into custody on Tuesday at her residence. She faces seven felony counts, including theft of public funds, filing false public records, and malfeasance in office. Authorities allege that Mitchell misused school funds for personal expenses, including unauthorized purchases and cash withdrawals, totaling more than $85,000 between 2022 and 2024.

The investigation began after a routine audit uncovered discrepancies in the school's financial records. School district officials cooperated with law enforcement, providing evidence that led to an arrest warrant. Mitchell, who resigned from her position in September 2024, was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail and later released on a $50,000 bond.

"This case underscores our commitment to holding public officials accountable for any breach of trust," said Sheriff Randy Smith in a press conference. "The alleged actions by this former principal have undermined the community’s confidence in its educational leadership."

The St. Tammany Parish Public School System released a statement confirming Mitchell's arrest, emphasizing that she is no longer employed by the district and that the affected funds have been recovered through insurance. The school system has also implemented additional safeguards to prevent future incidents.

Mitchell’s attorney has declined to comment on the charges. A court date has been set for February 20, 2025, at the 22nd Judicial District Court in Covington. The case remains under active investigation as law enforcement reviews whether other individuals were involved.
